Our story

"Every accomplishment begins with the decision to try..."
~ JFK

Talon Enterprise was started in 1997 by Curtis Strain. Growing up Curtis had learned a lot about building from his father who owned a business specializing in window replacement. As he gained knowledge of the various trades, he always knew that he would be his own boss someday. When his sister, Marjorie, started to buy empty lots of property, Curtis teamed up with her, and his father, to build custom houses on them. Finally he saw that dream become a reality, and Talon Enterprise Inc. was born.

Zack Latham started working for Curtis in 2012 as his lead carpenter. Having already gained a lot of experience in the construction Industry, Zack learned even more under the mentoring of Curtis. Eventually, Zack began managing projects for Talon and assisting in the bidding of new projects as well. Over time the relationship between Zack and Curtis became more of a partnership than that of a boss and employee.

Life can be unpredictable and nobody saw what would happen next.  Curtis had been battling Diabetes for some time and there was uncertainty about him recovering. Curtis sat Zack down and explained that he was worried that if he didn’t recover, that his employees would be out of work. He was also concerned that  his many clients from over the years would be left without the reliable service that Talon had been providing for them. So Curtis made plans to pass ownership of Talon to Zack.

In Zack’s words “I was a bit scared honestly. Curtis had gotten too sick to come out to the jobs, so I was running everything during the day and then going to see him at night. I told him that even though we had talked about me taking over the business for a few years, I wasn’t sure that I was ready.  I remember him telling me not to worry. He said the clients already knew me and that even though he was the owner, that they knew I would be the one running the jobs and working with them. Curtis told me that he had been training me to take over for years, but he hadn’t outright said so.”

Unfortunately Curtis passed away in February 2018 at only 58 years old. In the days and weeks that followed the staff at Talon were uncertain of what the future would hold for them. Zack understood one thing at the very least. The projects that they were in the middle of had to be completed. It may not have been his responsibility, but Curtis would have wanted it that way. And so it went, the jobs all got finished and the next chapter began.

Not wanting to let his team down, Zack stepped up and took on  the ownership of Talon. He realized that all the years he had spent learning from Curtis and previous jobs, had actually prepared him more then he thought.

Since that time business has been booming at Talon. Most of our clients are repeat business or word of mouth referrals. We also work with several real estate firms that routinely connect us to clients looking to get houses ready for the market, or renovate them just after closing.

Looking forward, Zack is excited to carry on with the legacy that Curtis had started and elevate the business in new ways. He says that they get a lot of requests to quote a job when people only have a general idea of the result they are looking for in their head, or with just a few examples to show.

“Trying to come up with a number to give people when they don’t have a sketch, materials picked out, or the overall scope of the project is next to impossible. Sure, it’s easy enough to look at a bathroom and come up with an estimate to give it a face lift. I can also look at a house and tell you what it would cost to paint it, or to add a deck to the back yard. But to give people an accurate quote for something like a kitchen remodel or an addition requires a lot more planning”

To solve this problem Zack started offering his design services to give his clients a clear picture of what they will be doing. This also allows him, as well as competing contractors to give an accurate bid.

“The clients receive a design which lists all of the materials  that will be used, details any plumbing and electrical that will need to be moved and installed. and lists all of the fixtures, appliances etc. Then they can get a few bids in addition to mine and see how we compare. If they end up using another contractor, I only charge them for my time to create that complete design. If they decide to hire us to do the job, I absorb the cost of the design process as part of the project.”

Besides working long hours, Zack and his wife Christina are very involved in their community. They are active with their kids activities, such as wrestling and ballet. They also support local charities such as Habitat for Humanity and donate to various charities.

Zack says that he would love it if his children wanted to work for him and take over the business some day…  “They would have to go to school first and get some kind of a degree. You always want a better life for your kids, but yea, I would love it if they wanted to be involved with Talon. The trades involved with construction aren’t a popular choice for young people, but we will always have a need for quality construction. They already love coming to ‘help Dad’ work on houses, but we will see what they decide to do when they get older. The choice is theirs”
